Buprenorphine is a medication used to treat opioid addiction. Since the Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 (DATA 2000), physicians who meet certain qualifications may treat opioid addiction with buprenorphine.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved buprenorphine products for use in opioid addiction treatment in 2002. Buprenorphine products are designed to decrease the potential for abuse by injection.
